Other + FATHER

Other & Father is a multi-channel installation that takes a BBC Broadcast of the artist’s father (David) and his girlfriend (Maura) as it’s starting point. Framed as a 1971 version of Romeo and Juliet because of David’s Protestant upbringing and Maura’s Catholic one, it is riddled with factual errors, and eventually led to David’s flight from his home town. This archival footage is projected opposite the artist’s own re-enactment shot in Belfast in 2015. Along with Mariah Garnett as her father, the film stars Robyn Reihill, a Belfast-based trans actress and artist. In addition to this large scale double projection, wall text chronicles early encounters with her father and reveals the BBC’s misrepresentations, mixed in with subjective diaristic impressions. A monitor placed outside of the projection room features David watching the original broadcast for the first time and re-acting to they way they constructed his story.
